my [f20] roommate [f20]'s room is making the whole hallway smell like must and old food and it's really gross. she hordes takeout in her room and will not throw it out. she is severely depressed and doesnt leave her room except to smoke weed on the porch (like 10 times a day), she's basically been in a self-induced weed coma for like a month now.
her room has been smelling for a while but she said she threw the old food out a few days ago. the smell actually did get better for a few days, but it came back with a vengeance today so i went into her room while she was smoking without her knowing. there was a massive pile of takeout bags and containers (and food she stole from other roommate). me and other roommate knocked on her door later and asked her if there was more food and if she could throw it out and she wouldnt let us in to see. i watched her throw out a singular bag that couldnt have even been 10% of the pile i saw.
i know she's been bingeing because she hasnt gotten groceries the whole time shes been here (2 months) and has just been ordering takeout in the middle of the night and eating it in her room secretively. we suspect that she's ashamed about the amount of food she's been eating and thats why she hasnt been throwing it out-- or she's just too depressed to do it.
she ghosts all our texts in the groupchat (reminders to clean up or to not take other peoples' food and stuff or not to smoke inside), even when they are obviously directed at her. also ghosts dms about similar matters. we’ve told her in person and over text multiple times all the house rules (nothing crazy, just not using ppls things without asking type stuff) and she just says yes and then proceeds to break the rules anyway. we’ve sort of given up on enforcing most rules + having a chore list, we’re most worried about the smell because it makes the house pretty unlivable.
what do we do? i am more than willing to clean it up for her if it means the smell will go away, but how do i stop her from persisting with this habit in the future?
me and her met through rooming and arent really friends. though ive tried to bond with her, she just doesnt leave her room. im not sure how to approach this issue as it is clearly very personal and emotionally charged…
tldr: severely depressed roommate is hoarding food, says she’ll throw it out when asked multiple times but doesn’t, and the whole house smells.
