I’m (30f) engaged to the love of my life (33m). He’s a career bartender- been doing it for ten years. The money is great and he loves what he does. I’m lucky enough to do a majority of work from home right now, and go in occasionally. We get to spend a lot of time together even though our schedules are opposite.
I am an anxious person in general and am constantly thinking about the future. I worry that his late, nighttime hours will affect his relationship with me and our future kids down the road. I think about him having to miss things like sports and school events, or our kids feeling like they only see one of us at a time. I also worry about the logistics of him tending bar forever, because it is a stressful and physically demanding job. He does not have a college degree and wants to keep bartending for the foreseeable future.
I like his job and I like that he loves it. I also think it’s great that once we have kids we won’t have to worry about daycare a ton since one of us will be home almost always. I don’t worry about job security and, like I said, the money is great. We love each other very much, and I don’t worry about our ability to communicate or anything like that. But I do know that things like lack of time together or opposite schedules can take its toll over time.
Has anyone here married a bartender, and if yes, how has your relationship progressed? Were there any major shifts along the way, especially as you had kids?
TL;DR: marrying a bartender, would like advice or stories from similar situations.
