My younger brother [20M] almost certainly has either ADHD and or autism. It has ben mentioned to us from a few different people with experience of this throughout his childhood. My father [55M] recently confessed this to me and wanted to know my opinion. I said he was probably right and asked why he never got my brother tested. What he said surprised me. He said he was too smart and would use it as an excuse for his poor behaviour.
My dad and my brother often get into arguments and I suspect his mental age is significantly lower than his actual age, and his behaviour reflects that.
My brother is going to university by himself this year and part of me is worried about how he is going to cope as he is still very dependent on my parents. I also think seeking a diagnosis will give him access to the support he would need. Not to mention he would be able to start medication which may help with the behavioural issues in the first place.
I want to tell my brother this and give him the support to seek a diagnosis but my dad strongly expressed that I shouldn't.
Would it be a good idea to talk to my brother about this or should I leave it to my parents to make that decision?
Tl:dr my dad thinks my brother has adhd and/or autism but refuses to get him tested on the basis that he might use it as an excuse for poor behaviour.
