I have a job where I dress casual. As long as I'm not showing cleavage or wearing overly ripped jeans, nobody cares what I wear. I often go for a casual t-shirt, sometimes with a graphic print, sometimes it's a band tee. The band tees are good, because it is sometimes a conversation starter with clients. I never dress up for work, I find that I am better recieved when dressed casual.
I came home the other night and was wearing a band shirt. My boyfriend commented that he couldn't believe I was allowed to wear it to work and I mentioned that I'm very lucky I can dress comfortably. He then asks if I'd be willing to wear HIS band merch to my job to get his band's name out there. His band is not widely well known and their music is heavy metal. Don't get me wrong, I love his band and I'm so into heavy metal, but some HM merch is weird. I tell him that his merch was too confronting and I wear the shirts to be a talking and bonding point, not to advertise. Outside of work, I always wear his merch!! Also I do not have personal ties to the other bands that I wear to work.
He pouted and I thought that was it. The following day I came home from work and all my casual shirts are gone. Not just the band ones, the graphics and the plain ones too. I asked what that was about and he said now I'd have to wear his merch to work because he boxed up my shirts and dropped them at a friend's house, but won't tell me which friend.
I packed a bag and I'm staying at my dad's, and I've been wearing blouses to work for the last couple days which I hate but I'm going shopping for new shirts tomorrow. He says that I can have my shirts back when I promise to wear his band's shirt. I tell him no, but he's accusing me of being unsupportive.
Honestly I have no idea how to navigate this. I don't have many friends, and the ones I do have are all closer to him. If anyone has advice I'd love to hear it. I'm considering breaking up with him but I'm worried that's a huge overreaction for something fixable. Our relationship is mostly fine other than this.
tldr- BF is hiding all of my shirts because I won't wear his band's merch to my job.
