Reddit peeps I need advice.
I have a 6mo girl, first grandchild in the family, and my mom keeps getting offended and put off when I make parenting decisions that are different from what she did. Nothing I’m doing is drastically different than she did, but she acts like not doing it exactly the same as she did is equivalent to calling her a bad mom.
For example, I chose not to put bumpers on my baby’s crib. Even after explaining to her that while It wasn’t the case 30 years ago, it’s seen as a SIDS risk now. Her response was “well I used bumpers and you (and siblings) and you all survived.”
For the past few months I’ve been gently turning her parenting advice down or kindly saying “no” when I don’t agree. But just last week she literally banned me from coming to visit unless I agree to do certain parental things that she KNOWS I’m against. I’ve told her like 20 times, and why.
This is super disappointing because 1- my husband and I work opposite shifts so sometimes I really need that mental break from the baby by being around other people who can help 2- the rest of my family miss the baby (all but 1 other sibling still live at home).
It kind of came out of left field and I’m really concerned. Dementia runs in my moms family really bad. It starts with hearing loss and the gradually progresses to full blown dementia. My moms hearing has been bad for several years now. Half the time i say something to her and she thinks I’m talking about something completely different. I think she’s trying to lip read because she’s in deep denial and refuses to get any hearing tests or hearing aids.
Do you think this parenting thing is a symptom of early dementia? Either way, what can I do or say to help move past this with her?

TL;DR mom thinks me making different parenting discussions is calling her a bad mom. Worried it might be a dementia symptom.
