My boyfriend (25m) says we have to hide our relationship and tell everyone we are just friends (24f)

I am in a situation which confuses me. My housemate and I have been living here since right before the pandemic got serious so since January January year. We became good friends and eventually a couple.

However now with things having opened up he has been wanting to have friends over but he says he wants us to say we are just friends. I asked him why and he said he wants to keep our relationship a secret. I know he doesn't have anyone else because we both work from home and he rarely goes out. He won't give me say explanation as to why he wants to hide me. He says if we go out publicly we also can't hold hands or show we are together.

Not sure how to proceed. He says if I loved him I would accept this but.......I don't know...
