My family wants me (27F) and my ex (27M) to pretend to still be together during Christmas for my sick grandmother (76F).
My grandmother has dementia and was asking about my ex “Jason” often. We broke up a year ago but dated for 6 years before that. My grandmother was very close to him and even gave him her wedding ring to use in case he wanted to propose. To say our breakup was messy would be an understatement.
I found out a few days ago that my sister had reached out to Jason and asked him to come visit my grandmother. He’s been spending some time with her for about two weeks now and no one in my family ever mentioned it to me. I ended up bumping into him by chance because I showed up unannounced. I’m definitely upset no one thought to tell me he was coming over, but I get it, my family are doing everything to make my grandmother more comfortable since her health has really been deteriorating recently.
The problem is my grandmother thinks we’re married, and for some reason, they’ve all, including Jason, been playing along. They now want us to pretend for Christmas and new year’s since this could be her last one and they want us to do everything to make it special for her.
I told them no and now everyone is angry at me. They think I should do it because Jason is giving up more to go along with it and that I should put my grandmother first. All of my friends think I should go along with it too and I’m starting to feel like I have to.
I’d love some advice on how to emotionally deal with having to pretend we’re still together? And how to make my family understand that I will only do this once and never again.
TL;DR – My grandmother has dementia and thinks I’m married to my ex. My family now want us to pretend we are for the holidays. My ex has already agreed to go along with it.
