This summer I plan on going on a lot of backpacking trips with my girlfriend and her best-friend, and hopefully next year go on a trip for around 5 months.
These trips will involve rainy conditions and sometimes snow.
My girlfriend is taking an expensive two person lightweight tent that will protect from the elements, but doesn't want me sleeping in the tent because she has issues with strong odors, and doesn't like the idea of sleeping next to someone with BO. (I don't smell more than the average person, but it will be after a day of hiking.)
Because of this I will be taking a sleep system that's also lightweight, but vulnerable to the elements.
*Important* she agreed that I could sleep in the tent if it's raining or snowing, even with the issue of smell, so it seems like there's no issue to me.
But lately I've been getting a lot of feedback from people (mostly online, so it could just be trolls, but a few in person.) That I'm being walked on. Some people have even said it's the most pathetic thing they've heard in awhile, that she's sleeping in the tent and making me sleep in a bivy. Etc etc. I could go on.
I've dismissed most of them, but after hearing it from a lot of people I'm starting to wonder.
(I could also buy my own sleep system that would protect me from the elements. That gets expensive after awhile, but I can still do it. I get the feeling after she's acclimated she won't care about the smells anymore, but I also feel like that should be her choice to make. There's no use arguing with her about it, right?)
Question: Is my gut feeling wrong and I'm being walked on?
TL;DR My girlfriend isn't comfortable sleeping in the same tent with someone who's been sweating and hasn't showered. Am I respecting her wishes or am I missing something?
To be honest, after typing this out, I feel more certain I should just respect her boundaries.
