My (24F) Boyfriend (33M) took his anger out on me after he found out his ex girlfriend got engaged

(We were together for a year) My ex boyfriend broke up with his ex girlfriend in 2016 (they dated for 4 years). He claimed he was over her and hated her, but he did a lot of things that contradicted he wasn’t

A week ago he found out through a friend that she was engaged. Throughout the entire day he was moody and upset. He said “let me send a picture of you to my ex with a ring to make her jealous” which I refused. He yelled at me which made me so angry that I broke up with him and went to live with a friend.

He’s been texting me and calling me nonstop apologizing. He said he was hurt because she owed him thousands (which was confirmed by multiple people) and she cheated on him (that’s debatable).

I do care about him and would friendship be an option? Or should I just cut him off completely?

TLDR- bf was upset and angry his ex got engaged.
