I’ve recently reconnected with an old friend after eight years. We (me 30f/him 31m) got along really well but we never made a move on each other and I wasn’t nor am I romantically interested in him and vice versa. He cut off contact seven years ago because his then-girlfriend didn’t like our friendship - that’s what he told me. However, that was okay for me.
About two months ago he contacted me again and told me him and his girlfriend broke up. We reconnected over lunch and he told me that his girlfriend was super jealous and that he wasn’t even allowed to speak to other women, that she was paranoid, etc., and that he couldn’t take it any longer, so he ended the relationship. He’s always been very flirty and constantly makes (weird) remarks towards me such as „You’re very, very pretty“ but also „In this particular outfit I would even date you“. I think he believes I’m interested in him, so those comments leave a bad taste in my mouth, especially since he keeps rubbing it in my face that he has a new girlfriend?! He even jokingly asked me if I was disappointed that he had a new girlfriend. Also, he is very, very active on social media and comments everything as well as sending me messages all the time about literally everything. I can’t and don’t want to answer every message he sends, so sometimes I don’t respond. This all would’ve been fine but a few weeks ago he told me he cheated on his „oh so paranoid“ girlfriend and monkey branched, so that he had his next girlfriend on standby when breaking up with his old one. This made me feel super uncomfortable and I just don’t see him in the same light anymore. I really don’t want to have anything to do with him anymore. Those awkward remarks which seem to be flirting, his constant need for messaging as well as cheating on his girlfriend turned me off him so bad.
He didn’t do anything to me, so I’m struggling with ending the friendship. Advice would be appreciated.
TLDR: Don’t want to stay in contact with an old friend. How can I let him know gently?
