My boyfriend (22/M) and I (23/F) — (2.5 year relationship) are living together, in the town of the university we both went to for our undergraduate degrees. We live in an apartment with two roommates, currently. He is getting his bachelor’s degree at the same university, and I am currently job-hunting.
My boyfriend has never had a dog or pet, as his parents wouldn’t allow it. Since I’ve known him, he’s said that he’s always wanted a dog. I have had a dog of my own - a small chihuahua - since I was 15, and he is extremely attached to me.
It was hard for me to leave my dog in my family’s care when I left for college, and the plan was always that I would take him when I moved out. My boyfriend knew that, and since we moved in together months ago, we planned to bring him to live with us.
Today is the third day since we’ve picked him up from my parent’s house, and my dog has had mixed reactions towards my boyfriend. Most of the time he’s relaxed and friendly, but as he’s a really nervous dog, he occasionally runs away or gives a warning growl. He hasn’t bitten him either.
It’s only been a few days so it makes sense why my dog wouldn’t be fully adjusted, but my boyfriend is panicking and having a breakdown because he feels he can’t handle a dog.
He keep saying he has too much stress about other things and feels like his world has been turned upside down.
I’m really genuinely confused because I’m the one caring for my dog. We also have a spare bedroom, so the dog has plenty of space to relax on his own, away from the bedroom that my boyfriend and I share.
I’m torn between what to do.... my boyfriend is always my priority, but my parents don’t want to care for my dog again unless I moved home. I can’t abandon my dog at a shelter, of course.
TL;DR;: my boyfriend says my dog is too much to handle after a few days with him, and I’m torn whether I should try to convince my parents to take my dog again.
