I posted this in /r/legaladvice but I figured some other input couldn’t hurt.
So I’m posting on behalf of my wife (29F). She came home today sort of in shock. Long story short is her boss made some comments today saying she would not be ok if her children were dating black people, and it would be even worse if they were gay.
This made my wife very, very uncomfortable. Not only do we have immediate family members who are not white and/or not heterosexual, but it’s just wrong to make comments like this in the workplace (or at all for that matter). She works for a major hospital in our state with an HR department. She wants to say something (not vindictive or to get back at her supervisor, more just to say that you can’t make those comments especially in the workplace) and get as little backlash as possible. She doesn’t know whether she should speak directly to her supervisor and say these comments made her uncomfortable, or to go directly to HR. She just wants to protect herself from any possible retaliation. Any input would be appreciated.
tl;dr Wife’s boss made racist comments. What should she do.
