Was it wrong that I (24F) broke up with my boyfriend (33M) because he wouldn’t throw out his ex’s toothbrush?

I was cleaning the bathroom and organizing the drawers. He told me “throw out anything useless you see” so I made a “keep pile” and a “throw out pile”.

When he came to check up on my he grabbed a clearly used and old looking toothbrush from the “throw out pile”. I asked him why he needed that and he said it belonged to his “Bitch ex girlfriend”. Alarms went off in my head and I asked him “why are you keeping that?”. He then told me some weird explanation how she owes him money (stole some of his belongings too) and he needs proof they were together or something? And he’s planning to return her other things (he confessed he has a bunch of her clothes) once she gives his stuff back first. I asked him when they broke up and he said 7 YEAR AGO!

We were together for a year and a half, but I broke up with him because that was extremely creepy and unnerving. He also refused to throw it out when I told him I found it weird.He’s now accusing me of being “evil/cruel” and how he isn’t in love with his ex and how I broke his heart.

Was I too impulsive? Should I have ignored it? I’m starting to feel a bit heartless or leaving him.

TLDR- I broke up with my bf because he still had an ex’s stuff after 7 years.
