EDITORIAL NOTE: His parents are not in his life and grandma has custody.
So here’s the situation. I babysit my 2 year old nephew 5 days a week. He has shoulder-length hair and one of his favorite things to do is play hairdresser. Every day we do a new cool hairdo. So far he’s had various Star Wars-themed updos, man buns, space buns (his favorite), boxer braids, mohawks, slicked back “greaser” hair, and french braids.
This has all been fine, or at least I thought so until today. He lives with his grandma (my aunt) and she asked my dad to tell me to stop “doing his hair and making him look like a girl.”
To me, we’re just having innocent fun. If you know 2 year olds, they don’t sit still for ANYTHING, even things they like, but my nephew will sit still long enough for me to do hairdos that are relatively time-consuming. It makes him really happy when I take a picture and show him what his hair looks like. I never force him to do it and we’re inside my house all day, anyway. I tried to tell him today that we couldn’t do his hair, and he cried. I think she is being ridiculous, but I don’t know how to go about this situation. Do I stop doing his hair? Do I stand my ground?
TL/DR: My nephew has long hair and I give him cool hairdos for fun. His grandma thinks I’m “making him look like a girl.” What do I do?
