I [32M] met this guy[26M] while traveling this summer, and I'd really like to get to know him better but I'm not sure how

Despite my age, I'm very introverted and not great at social interaction. Only the last year or so I've started to come out of my shell. I'm also autistic, which is a hindrance sometimes when it comes to interacting with people. This summer I stepped way out of my comfort zone and travel abroad. I met a lot of people and made some new friends, among them this one guy, I'll call him Jay. Now while traveling I only had the chance to talk to Jay two or three times, but we became friends on instagram. We've spoken a few times since I got back, and I told him I wished I had gotten to spend more time with him, and he agreed he felt the same. But I think about Jay almost every day and I want to talk to him all the time, but I don't want to scare him away. I would love to be better friends with him, if more was possible, great. I don't know his sexual orientation, and I don't feel like I know him well enough yet to ask. Like if I asked him now it might backfire. I end up in situations like this a lot and I'm tired of all these great people slipping through my fingers because I don't know how to hold on to them. What can I do?

TLDR: Met someone while traveling and haven't stopped thinking about him since I got back, but I'm shy and I have no idea how to try and get closer to him.
