So, for background information, my mother passed away in December. E-mails were sent to all of my teachers so they are aware of this.
Today in my ceramics class, our teacher was trying to help a kid figure out what his final project would be for the year.
I chimed in and asked if he had a mom (to see if he wanted to make something for Mother's Day). My teacher said, "Everyone has a mom!" and said how we all came from somewhere, yadda yadda yadda.
I just kind of went quiet after that and I can't stop thinking about it. For reference, this teacher hugged me with tears in her eyes after she found out about my mom passing away.
I am almost positive that this comment wasn't meant in a harmful way, but it still really hurt me and I had to hold back tears in class. Maybe she forgot, but even then, there are people who have abusive parents/live in a home with single parents. It's like if she said that everyone has a dad/two parents.
I want to talk to her and explain that what she said seriously hurt my feelings. She is(was?) my favorite teacher at this school and I was wanting to continue our relationship outside of school, but now I don't really know. However, I only have about three weeks left of school, so I don't know if I should bother.
TL;DR: Teacher said something that rubbed me the wrong way and I don't know if I'm overreacting or if I'm justified in wanting to talk to her about how her statement felt insensitive to me.
EDIT: I've decided to just stay quiet for now because I don't think there's a comfortable way I can really bring it up. I think for my sake I'll just limit our conversations and maybe we can have a relationship once I'm doing better in terms of mental health. Thanks for the input, everyone.
