I finally graduated from school and I landed myself a good paying job. 65k a year with 14% company contribution into a 401a. This is more money than I have ever made in my life and I have always lived on the cheaper end of life. My wife and I combined make around ~90k a year.
My family doesn't make as much as I do, except perhaps my brother, where my brother likes to spend more money than I am comfortable with spending. For example, $30 for a lunch, vs either leftovers from home or a quick 4 for $4 from Wendy's.
We are just wrapping up a trip and I spent more money on food than I would have liked to over 2 days. Literally $60 combined over TWO meals. This morning, my family wanted to go to breakfast when I was just ready to leave town. Honestly, a granola bar or something would have done but they were insistent on eating as a family.
We are Hispanics, in our culture when you invite someone to food, then you are expected to pay for them. However this time I had my doubts on that and asked who was paying for the meal. And they said I was. This displeased me greatly, and they made jokes on "you are on vacation and you are making really good money." But at that point I had enough and said had I known, I would have just skipped town and left. Which left everyone awkward and my family decided to keep things in the traditional way and agreed to pay for it.
Now in the long run, $100 bucks for a meal doesn't hurt me financially. However I am still in the poor college student mode and I personally feel it would be best to stay that way for a long time. I want to save up for a down on a house, buy a mountain bike, pay off my student loans, and start living a financially stable life.
My family wants to go on a trip out of the country this time around and I don't really know how to tell them no without offending them. Because I know they will bring up my financial situation.
Has anyone been in a similar situation? Or does anyone have any advice on how to better prepare myself for this stuff? (Not sure if this belongs on Personal Finance)
Tl;Dr Have good paying job, family thinks I'm too frugal. How to tell them I want to live frugally without insulting anyone.
