I don't think my BF uses reddit but I'll still use a throwaway and a fake name for him just in case.
So my parents (47F + 55M) offered to take my BF Lucas (25M) and I (23F) out to dinner for the first time since we started dating (1 year and 2 months).
My parents are humble middle class people and Lucas is also from a middle class background. The point is Lucas knows my parents aren't rich.
At dinner my Mum and I both ordered the carbonara pasta and my Dad ordered the salmon and all our meals were roughly the same price. We also ordered BEFORE Lucas so he knew what we were ordering and he was also fully aware of the price of our meals because he read the menu back to front.
But Lucas - to my surprise - orders the most expensive item on the menu. A premium steak that's special in some way and costs like 4x as much as our meals.
I asked Lucas, "Are you SURE that's what you want?" to hint that maybe he shouldn't order the expensive premium steak when my parents are footing the bill. He doesn't catch the hint and just says, "Yeah I'm sure, it sounds delicious" and goes ahead and orders it anyway.
I hoped Lucas would offer to split the bill with my parents after ordering such an expensive meal. He didn't. My Mum ended up paying for the whole bill with her credit card.
So now I am beyond disgusted.
When Lucas and I go out to dinner together he never orders super expensive meals because we split the bill. Now that his meal is suddenly on my parents dime he decides to pick the most expensive thing on the menu? It just seems really selfish to me.
On the drive home I was seething with anger. Lucas noticed and asked me what was wrong but I lied and said I was just tired. I've never been so angry with Lucas before and I was scared of blowing up at him and jeopardizing the relationship.
I'm not the best with words and I need to know how to approach Lucas about this?
Does my boyfriend lack social etiquette in this area? Or is he just selfish and I'm beginning to see his true colours? Has this happened to anyone else?
TLDR: BF ordered an expensive steak when my parents were paying for dinner. No one else ordered anything anyway near as expensive as his steak. How do I talk to my BF about this?
