I’ve had a best friend for the past 13 years. He’s had a girlfriend for almost a year, and since I met her my relationship with my best friend has changed.
This guy is like a brother to me, no attraction or history besides being best friends. The other day my friend and I were talking about how we never see each other. He let me know his gf was uncomfortable with him being such good friends with a female in the beginning but assured me there was no current issue. I suggested that it was possible that in the beginning I noticed tension, so pulled back to allow them to work through it and then we never got back on track. We hashed it out and decided to just move on from this uncomfortable stage we had been in.
Next day I get a call from both of them where his gf questions my motives, gave me grief for not trying to reach out to her and get to know her regardless of her dislike for me (I needed to “prove” myself), and informed me that she’s not comfortable with us hanging out alone and that she doesn’t want him with any female alone. Maybe one day we might be “allowed” to “get a lunch once in a while”.
I have a problem with this. I do not think I need to prove myself in this way. I think I should just call my friend and let him know I’m going to give them space because he doesn’t need the added stress of trying to navigate this, and I’m not going to prove myself to someone he’s only known a comparatively short amount of time. Reiterate I’m there for him, and that this lack of trust in their relationship is not something he deserves. Thoughts?
