Summary:
Don't be a bitch, but also don't forget to be kind to yourself.
Body:
I didn't come here to spread some flowery bullshit, but a significant life event (a friend of mine lost his battle with depression) reminded me of something very important, and that moved me enough to make my first post (bring on the frying).
There's a lot of tough love on these forums, and that's a good thing. We set high standards and hold ourselves accountable when we fail. Nevertheless, recent events have helped me realize that despite all of my shortcomings, I'm not doing too bad, and chances are, neither are you. Don't get me wrong, I have my fair share of problems, but guess what - everybody's got problems.
Now this isn't a free pass to absolve yourself of all responsibility, but if you're beating yourself up over something - maybe your life's not where you want it to be right now, maybe you pussed out on talking to that cute girl at the party, or maybe you lost the genetic lottery, whatever - if you find yourself wallowing in that darkness for a little too long, try to check yourself. Keep in mind that however bad you think you have it, odds are you're doing better than 50% of the population. I appreciate that other people's lives may be more complicated than mine, and I don't mean to trivialize what other people are going through, but ffs man, if shit gets really bad, don't be too proud to ask for help.
Conclusion:
At the end of the day, all you have is yourself. So if you find yourself suffering from a sense of low self worth, my message to you is this: Remember to be kind to yourself.
As I write this, there is an excellent post on the front page by u/mindset_warrior about self esteem. If my post speaks to you, then maybe that one will, too.
