Me(20,M) and my friend(20,M) are best buddies. But he never pays for anything we purchase. How should I convey my message without hurting his feelings?

We both have been friends for like 5years and we really like to hang out with each other. We have another friend(20,F). We all three hang out usually. I love my group and I love both of them equally. But the thing is whenever we are out, and try some new cafe or anything. My male friend never pays, he is always short of money. Me and my female friend has to pay, always.

And when I'm only with my male friend, I have to pay for everything, he never contributes. The thing is, if it's a celebration or its my birthday, I will never ask for even a penny. But I' am a college student and my parents give me just enough to go a month long. And I have to purchase novels also, but usually I'm left with no money.

I just cannot tell him directly, It might hurt him, or what if I loose him, over this issue. How should I tell him or how should I convey this to him without hurting him??

Edit; he actually took admission in a foreign university and it cost heaven. Due to this I feel even more bad and guilty while telling him to pay.

TL;DR: my buddy never pays for anything, due to which I'm always broke by the mid of month. How should I tell him without hurting his feelings, that he should start paying for half of it??
