My sister [F27], who has a history of mental health issues, just left her husband and toddler son. She flew across the country without telling anyone and says she is now living with someone she met online. She isn't giving us any other information. This has all happened in the last 72 hours.
As I indicated above, my sister has some mental health issues — especially anxiety. She has also attempted overdosing on pills in the past, though it has been several years. She has often had issues with developing strong friendships and has a history of poor choices, despite her otherwise being a good person and staying out of trouble.
Recently, I heard that her marriage was on the rocks and she was considering getting out. Little did we know at the time that she actually planned on abandoning her husband (my brother-in-law) and her son, who is two years old. It was not until several hours after she disappeared that she responded to my mother’s frantic calls and text messages, only indicating that she was “OK.”
Since then, she has revealed little about her circumstances. We know that she is in San Diego (more than 1500 miles from home) and that she indicated that she met someone online that she is now living with. When asked why she didn’t tell any of us that she was going to do this, she said she felt ashamed and that we would be mad at her for wanting to make this choice.
She is not telling us where exactly she is in the city, nor who this person is that she is with. This has all transpired in the last 72 hours.
If anyone has any suggestions on how this situation should be handled, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.
