I've known my girlfriend for almost 3 years, and we've dated for one. She's an undergraduate and I'm in graduate school in a different state, so a lot of the relationship has been long distance (although I'm able to get into town 1-2x a month and spend school breaks with her). We both graduate in spring of 2020. I've got a job lined up in a new city and she's eager to join me there. We plan to marry each other after graduation, but I haven't proposed yet.
Last week, in the middle of a make-out, she gets these Bambi eyes and tells me that she wants me talk to her parents "when the time is right." Over the next few days, her friends started hitting me up to tell me that what she wants for Christmas is an engagement. They've also messaged me details about rings she likes.
I love my girlfriend, and I think she's the one. But neither one of us is going to transfer/drop out of school to move, so I don't really see marriage as a realistic option until spring of 2020 (at the earliest). I want to marry my GF, but I think that it's too early for a proposal at this point, and I feel like I need to head this off before she really gets into this idea of a Christmas proposal.
- Am I crazy for thinking that an 18 month engagement (in a LDR) would suck?
- What's the best way to communicate my love for her while letting her know I don't feel comfortable proposing yet?
