Is being with the wrong person really worse than being alone forever?

I’m a 26F in my first and only relationship. I didn’t get into a relationship until I was 23 (semi by choice) as I didn’t find anyone I wanted to be with.

I’ve been going out with my bf for 2.5 years now. He was the first ‘normal’ and kind person to show a strong interest in me and I fell hard for him. The first two years of our relationship were very happy.

In the last year I’ve started to realise deep down that he may not be ‘the one’ for me and that we may not be super compatible long term. I’m more mature than he is and things he does have started to annoy me. I can also see small elements of selfishness in him that make me concerned about what my life would be like if we had a child together one day.

I’d say I’m attractive I’m a physical sense (people tell me I am often) but I’m very introverted and don’t make close connections often. This makes me worried for my future if I am to end this relationship. I know this is selfish but I do think my choice is to stay with him or to risk being alone forever/finding someone worse

TL;DR - is it a huge mistake to stay with someone you know isn’t right for you, as being alone will be worse?
