Okay so my girlfriend and I have been trying to figure out how to handle this situation for a while now and figured why not try Reddit. We have this friend, we’ll call her Olivia, she’s 18 and is currently in a sexual relationship with a 40 year old man, let’s call him Kyle. (Names changed ofc)
Olivia and Kyle met while Olivia was still under the age of 18. Once she turned 18, the relationship quickly became “romantic” and soon after sexual. As soon as I told my girlfriend about this she was SO uncomfortable. She is just so concerned for Olivia’s safety. My girlfriend thinks that if the legality of a relationship depends on a few months or even years then it’s still predatory and wrong. I would agree.
Now for my main issue (as if the age gap wasn’t enough), he is EXTREMELY mentally and emotionally abusive. They started out in a seemingly romantic and emotional relationship, however, it now seems like it’s more of a friends with benefits type situation. Olivia is absolutely determined to meet this mans every need. He is never happy with her and is constantly gaslighting and manipulating her in every way you can imagine. He’s even admitted to using her for sex, he took her virginity for heavens sake, she’s blind to him.
Olivia is constantly messaging me about problems they are having and asking how she can please him and “fix” their relationship. I keep trying to tell her that this is not a healthy relationship and that she is being abused but she just doesn’t seem to hear me. I can’t get through to her no matter what I try. My girlfriend is getting more concerned as the days go on. This has been happening for almost a year now.
What do I do?? Am I overstepping? Is this wrong? Please help me out on this one.
TL;DR: my friend (18f) is in an emotionally and mentally abusive relationship with a 40m. He constantly gaslights and manipulates her. She is blindly dedicated to pleasing his every need. What do I do??
