Sorry for any spelling mistakes, I am on mobile and English is not my native language. The names are made up.
So, my parents got divorced when I was 10. I lived with my mom until I was 15 and she fell in love with Cliff (48M). She decided to move in with him after a few months of dating, but he lived at the other side of our country (France) so I stayed with my dad so it would not mess up my high school career and so I could keep on seeing my friends.
Now, I have one younger brother (17M) who did move with my mom and Cliff but he stayed only 3 months, saying he could not stand Cliff.
I never really got to know Cliff personally, so I did not have an opinion on him. My mom married him two years ago. I’m currently at university but I was in a car accident 3 months ago and kind off still recovering from that, since my dad works a lot, my mom offered I’d stay with her and Cliff.
Here comes the problem: Cliff has a daughter, Maya. Maya’s mom is Italian, just like her mom, Maya has very curly hair. It’s pretty, it suits Maya nicely. However, Maya has dandruff (the fact that I know this shows how much of an issue this is).
The dandruff isn’t a lot. According to Cliff it’s cause she doesn’t wash her her properly. The things Cliff does are just baffling. For exemple: We are going to pick Maya up from school, first thing he does when she gets in the car is not saying hi or asking how she’s doing, he immediately goes aggressively through her hair, and sees she has dandruff and scolds her for it. Sometimes when they get home he immediately makes her wash her hair again.
Maya used to have long hair. Cliff prefers short hair. Cliffs sister is a hairdresser, so he takes Maya to the go her aunt and they chop her hair off until she has a buzz cut. It makes her get bullied in school, Cliff says she deserves it because it’s probably cause the kids see it’s not well taken care of.
I could name a bunch of things like this. Maya is scared to visit Cliff and my mom, she doesn’t want to and from what I hear her mom is actually going to court about it. Yesterday I heard him tell her that she should learn to wash her hair properly or she would be a loser and then he insulted her.
I stood up for Maya and later mentioned this to Cliff and my mom but Cliff tells me that’s he’s Maya’s dad so he gets to decide. (Cliff is bald so his haircare knowledge is limited). My mom says I should not interfere.
Am I going insane? How can I help Maya?
Tl;dr: Stepsad insults his kid about her hair, how can I stop this?
