To preface this, my neighbors are absolutely insane. They are nosy, have gone through my mail multiple times, and knock on my door at inappropriate hours for non-emergencies. If I do not answer this escalates into them banging on my door and yelling to see if I’m inside.
They have an extremely overweight, aggressive dog that does not listen to them and is allowed to run around off leash (which violates our apartment’s lease). Whenever I bring my older dog outside, they immediately try to call their own dog away (which never works because he doesn’t listen) knowing that he will try to attack her. To avoid this, I never bring either of my dogs outside when they’re out there. They probably haven’t seen the dogs go out in months.
I work night shifts, typically from 4pm-midnight or later. When I’m away I leave my younger dog crated and my older dog in the living room with the fan on. Sometimes, as my younger dog is still a puppy, he whines in the crate. I’ve checked with my other neighbor who shares a wall with me in the room he is in and she does not hear him. Occasionally to let air in I will leave a window open and this makes his whining audible if you’re in the courtyard but not inside the apartment unit. Today was one of those days, which contributed to the events that followed.
Today while I was at work, I received multiple calls, voicemails, and texts from my elderly neighbors accusing me of neglect. They admitted to peeping through my window to see my dogs. Their accusations are based on the fact that my dogs are home alone with the lights turned off and gasp laying on the couch doing nothing. They made it out like they saw my dog’s dying corpse when she was just taking a nap. They also never see me bring my dogs out, but I take them to the dog park every single day for an hour or more. I leave the lights off because I am not going to leave the lights on for 8 hours a day while I’m at work and it’s nighttime, especially knowing my dogs sleep while I’m away. This is not the first time they’ve called me over this or the first time they’ve looked into my windows on purpose and have admitted it.
How do I deal with this? I just bought new blinds and a tapestry to cover the blinds and I’m considering getting reflective window covers. I’ve been trying to be civil and not get my leasing office involved. I don’t know if that would make them worse or if they would finally back off. I’ve started keeping a record of the things they do or say that could constitute as harassment but I’m concerned they’re only going to get worse.
TL;DR My neighbors constantly harass me with false accusations and are totally in my business. How do I stop this without escalating the situation?
