I work in a small retail store as the manager. I love my job, I love my team, but I'm having a problem with one specific team member. So, we hired her a few months ago and she seems to have trouble navigating social situations. For example, if I am at one end of the store speaking to one of my team about something, she'll walk over and ask what we're talking about. This is constant, happens at least 10 times a shift. If I'm joking with a staff member she'll come over and make comments as if she has been in on the conversation. Just stuff like that. I have a policy of not letting any staff member talk negatively about another staff member, and if they do it's an automatic write up. But as the manager, I have noticed that there is a lot of irritation towards this girl. Some people have spoken to me privately expressing their frustrations (she does things too slowly, makes weird comments, etc), and I listen, but don't chime in with anything.
The issue is that I KNOW this girl just wants to be a part of the group and the conversation. I've actively tried to engage her in discussions with the group, but it seems like if she's not a part of EVERY discussion, it's not enough. I think she's a very nice person and know there is no malice behind any of this. How do I approach working with her and keeping my team content, while keeping empathy in mind?
tldr;irritating coworker (but she's nice), how do I handle it?
