Finances: The hill I'll die on. How do I [35M] talk to my wife [34F] about her insane desire for an expensive house?"

My wife and I live in one of the most desirable neighborhoods in our city. It is an awesome place. Great for our kids (4 y/o girl and 1 y/o boy).

It's also expensive, but we are fortunate. Both of us make a good income and we can afford our current house.

But our house is at the bottom end of the neighborhood. Every house cheaper than ours gets torn down at sale, and a fancy new $1.2MM+ home goes up. We have been in our home 3 years.

The wife now wants a fancy new $1.2MM+ home. This would increase our housing costs by about $45,000 per year.

Folks: there is NO FUCKING WAY.

Even with the money we make, this would be unaffordable. In theory, I guess we could spend close to every cent we earn to do it. We'd basically have to stop saving for college/retirement.

She doesn't get how bad an idea this is, and I don't know how to make her understand the sheer insanity of what she's suggesting.

I'm willing to move neighborhoods. But I'm not willing to (literally) mortgage our entire future. It's hard, because I really am not willing to compromise. (Note: our current house is OK but has its flaws. She doesn't want to stay here long term.)

This is rapidly shaping up to be the biggest fight of our 6 year old marriage. How do I talk to her??

TL;DR: Wife wants a super expensive house. We can't afford it.
