Requesting Advice - Religious Coworker (50M) Sharing Teachings at Work - Makes Me (30F) Uncomfortable
TL/DR: A new manager (50M) has been discussing his religion during work meetings which I (30F) find uncomfortable and inappropriate. I am seeking advice on how to address this with him in a tactful and productive way.
Hi everyone! Hoping I can get advice on my relationship at work with a work colleague.
There are lots of employees within our company who practice the same religion and I have learned more about it over the years with colleagues that I have had personal conversations with at work and I'm fine with it. I myself am an atheist, however, no one has asked me although I don't hide it - few people are aware of that at work. Only twice in 8 years was I ever invited to a church event to which I politely declined and was never brought up again.
For the last few months, this new manager consistently uses his management training day to teach on a subject from this church for how we can improve our lives, work experience, or relating back to management. I feel like this is completely inappropriate although I'm not sure of the best way to address this. I feel myself completing checking out from his message once he starts going on about a teaching he learned at church.
My sister suggested I do my next training on the flying spaghetti monster and loosely relate it back to management to illustrate a point. I'm considering discussing with some of my direct peers how they feel about hearing these messages in meetings - I do have relationships with managers that practice this religion as well that I could ask. Any suggestions for a delicate way to confront this new manager directly in a way that is conducive to a positive work relationship?
Side note: I am planning to leave the company late this year but no one else is aware of that yet since I want to get my affairs and plans in order before I make my exit.
