I (24/F) just found out that I have a half-sister (31/F) and I’m not sure whether to tell my mum (50/F).

I recently got a message on Facebook from a woman claiming to be my half-sister. I believe that she’s telling the truth.

The story is that her mother was someone my dad dated briefly in college, who never told him when she got pregnant. The mother only recently told my half-sister my dad’s name. She looked him up and learned that he had died a few years ago, so she contacted me after seeing my name listed in his obituary as his daughter.

She said that she just wanted to confirm the truth and know a little bit about her father, she’s not planning to reach out to anyone else in the family and hasn’t asked to meet up or anything like that. So that’s all fine with me, I didn’t mind talking to her.

But now I’m not sure if I should tell my mum about this. I think she’d be really upset to find out that my dad had a child before he met her, even if he didn’t know about it. And it seems especially cruel to upset her with something like this when she's still grieving for my dad. But it also feels really weird to keep this a secret from her.

tl;dr: I have a half-sister through my father, and I’m not sure if I should tell my mum?
