I work in a law firm as a paralegal, and one of the attorneys massively gets on my nerves. I have strategies to deal with her so that I’m still able to get my work done, but I’m looking for advice on how to stop letting her annoy me so much.
I have two problems with her. The first is that she is completely inept at giving clear instructions or explanations. (This is a problem that others in the office, both attorneys and support staff, also have with her). It’s never taken fewer than 10 minutes of back-and-forth with her to make sure that I have all the information needed when she assigns me a task, which is especially frustrating because the assignment is never as complicated as she initially makes it sound. Additionally, her tone after I ask a clarifying question indicates that she thinks I’m stupid for not understanding.
The second problem is that if I do something incorrectly, she doesn’t differentiate between an error and a mistake. For example, this morning I saved a document under the wrong name. She wouldn’t accept the explanation that I had simply clicked on the wrong document while uploading; she assumed that I didn’t actually know what the correct document should have been, and then wasted a good 5 minutes trying to explain (badly) what she thought I didn’t know, in the same condescending manner as when I ask questions.
I know neither of these issues are the end of the world, but dealing with her makes me unreasonably angry. How do I not let it get to me? I otherwise really enjoy this job, but I feel like if I can’t learn to stop letting her behavior bother me, I’m going to end up quitting because of her.
Thanks for any advice!
tl;dr: I'm a paralegal, and one of the attorneys I work under drives me crazy. How do I stop this from ruining my enjoyment of my job?
