My fiancé and I are supposed to get married next Friday. We were talking about the pressure of writing our own vows and I said," it doesn't really matter what you say, as long as you say you love me forever." He responded with "but I don't know if I can say that." I asked him what he meant and he just said that things change and he can't make that kind of a commitment forever so he doesn't want to say that.
I know that marriage can end in divorce and nothing is set in stone forever but... isn't the point of getting married that we promise to be together for the long run? I'm just upset and surprised that he said that so point blank and that it seems like he's already having second thoughts before we even get married. I know we could potentially grow apart and things could change, but I know that right now I want to be with him forever, so I'm hurt that he won't say that.
What do I do? Should I confront him? I don't understand how he could go from happily proposing (without any prompting, he was ready before I was) to saying things like this a year later.
tl;dr My fiancé told me he's not sure he can say he'll love me forever a week before our wedding. What do I do?
