Fiancé and I (early 30's, late 20's, M/F) asked people to COVID vax for our wedding. Future step-mother in-law (40's F) is anti-vax and blaming us for 'cancel culture.' Future FIL (50's M) won't come without her.
Not sure if this violates the no politics rule, but here we go.
My fiancé and I (early 30's, late 20's, M/F) are getting married late this summer. We planned our wedding on the condition that COVID vaccines would be widely available (they are in our area), and asked that all people be vaccinated to attend.
Well, turns out my future step-mother in-law (40's F) is vehemently anti-vax. My future father-in-law (50's M) has been vaccinated but has taken her side and will not come without her.
I suggested we get together to talk things over, but she won't. She will never ever change her mind, and is blaming my fiancé and I for damaging the relationship by imposing 'cancel culture' on her decisions and bodily autonomy. While she is 'sad' that our actions have caused my fiancé and his father to distance, she has made it clear that she accepts no responsibility and everything is our fault.
We're not trying to 'cancel' her for her opinions. We're trying to protect everyone else who attends our wedding. Our guest list is small, but a number of people on it are elderly, have severe pre-existing conditions that put them at high risk, and/or are just very afraid of COVID. While they all have been vaccinated, and the vaccine is effective, it's not 100%.
How do we move past this? There's the immediate problem of having a safe wedding, but this has tainted our interactions well beyond that. My fiancé does not speak to his mother or most of his family. He is (was?) close with his father, and I don't want him to lose that.
tl;dr: My fiancé and I are asking people to vaccinate against COVID for our wedding. My future step-mother in-law is anti-vax and will not come if we insist she be vaccinated. My future father-in-law supports her and will not come without her. They are blaming my fiancé and I for 'cancel culture' and it's deteriorating the relationship between my fiancé and his father.
