My son and I are very close. He’s technically my nephew but his mom, my sister, overdosed when he was a little over a year old. I was appointed his guardian and have had custody ever since. While he knows he’s adopted he doesn’t know what happened to his mother. Meanwhile for the past 3 years I’ve been dating a wonderful woman who I truly believe is the one. When we started dating she got along fantastic with my son and they were like two peas in a pod. As time has continued he’s been more standoffish and distant to both of us. When I ask him about it he tells me that he “just doesn’t like her anymore” or just “cuz I want to” without any other explanation. I figure it’s just a phase and he’ll get over it but I’m getting ready to propose and really can’t imagine doing it without knowing my son actually likes her. Similarly, I was talking to her yesterday and she broke down because it’s been weighing on her too. She doesn’t feel comfortable continuing to date if it continues to upset my son. Is this normal for a boy his age? Should I be worried? How do we go about navigating this difficult time?
