Should I strike up a conversation after 4 years?

About four years ago I met this guy, he and I really clicked. We worked together and were generally around each other a lot, and I feel as though we had good chemistry. There may have been flirting involved? (Not positive because I'm quite dense when it comes to that) I never pursued that path as we worked so close I didn't want things to be awkward if he wasn't interested, but I definitely had a pretty big crush on him.

After a few months I moved back to my hometown. We spoke via text the day I left but we haven't spoken since, although I still have him as a friend on facebook.

Within the last 6 months or so he has moved fairly close to where I live. There's an event coming up that I'm attending and I know for sure that he will be there. A close friend of mine who knows the backstory has encouraged me to shoot him a message through facebook seeing if he would be keen to catch up while we're both there.

My question is; considering we haven't spoken in 4 years, would it be weird coming so out of the blue? Or is it something that wouldn't/shouldn't freak him out and might actually be worth a shot?

Tl;dr haven't spoken to someone in 4 years, wondering if its acceptable to contact him
