So, this is maybe an odd question, but I met a guy on tinder. We arranged to meet for coffee, got on really well and ended up spending the evening at the cinema and going to a bar after. It was a really nice date, really interesting guy.
His profile said he was 33, and that he lives between the place I live now, and coincidentally, the nearest city to where I come from and my parents live.
His profile also said he was an academic, in a completely different field to mine, and that we’d attended the same university as grad students.
Whilst we were speaking, it turns out that he actually collaborates a lot with people in my field. And at some point, the discussion turned to what I do, and he pretty much put his finger on every single problem I’ve been thinking of recently, and then gave a speech which was really really well informed about my area, as in, he summed up exactly what I’d written down last week in part of a draft for a paper.
I googled him afterwards, and it turns out he’s not a postdoc like I assumed, but a professor.
I said this to him over WhatsApp, and he made a joke about me googling him and said „I’m 37..“. Except he’s not, he’s 39, because his university profile has his year of birth.
I feel a bit kind of duped, do people think this is a red flag?
In a way, I don’t care how old he is exactly, but obviously no one would guess a 33 year old was a professor, whereas a 39 year old could well be. I think I also said a few things like, „well, I wouldn’t admit this to a professor, but..“ and then said something about how I didnt understand some complicated maths and thought it didn’t carry over well to a problem. And he sort of smiled and recommended some reading.. I feel a bit stupid now, and obviously would have acted completely differently if I’d realised that he was a senior person in a field that was near enough my own that I might see him at conferences. I also wouldn’t have gone on a date with him.
Tl;dr tinder date turned out to be a professor who collaborated with people in my field. Is this too weird?
