My boyfriend and I are members of the same profession, but I work in government and he is corporate. Unsurprisingly, he makes significantly more than I do.
I love what I do (and can say with confidence that I would HATE doing what he does). However, it can be mentally exhausting and often requires me to work evenings and weekends without any additional compensation.
The end of the year is particularly busy and I’m feeling pretty burnt out right now. I’ll be working this weekend and every day next week, including at least a few hours on Christmas. This is adding to my stress, as I absolutely love the holidays and am feeling like I don’t have much time to really enjoy it this year. And of course, money is tight.
My boyfriend, meanwhile, has all of next week off. He just got a nice holiday bonus. And he is rarely, if ever, required to work outside the hours of 9-5.
I love him and am happy that he has a good job with such great benefits. But especially now with how stressful things have been, I can’t seem to avoid feelings of resentment towards him and all his free time and extra money. I know it’s not his fault and I hate feeling like I’m lashing out at him when he’s not doing anything wrong. I guess I’m basically asking for any advice on how to better manage these feelings. Any help would be appreciated!
tl;dr: boyfriend makes significantly more money at significantly less hours (we have the same profession). How to manage feelings of resentment towards him and all his free time when I’m struggling through a period of burnout and excessive stress at work?
