I’ll try and keep it short and sweet.
My boyfriend is one of the cringiest people I’ve ever met. Don’t get me wrong, I think he’s cool, but he talks in accents he doesn’t have ALL THE TIME and it makes me angrier than it should.
We’re from Canada, and aside from pronouncing ‘ou’ words a bit differently, there is no cool accent from us.
Here we are with our basic, blank canvas english. A couple months ago, my boyfriend started talking with a british accent. I thought it was kind of funny / cute at first because I thought he was just joking around, but now he will seriously go 10 mins at a time talking with a (horrible) british accent.
I call him out on it every time and ask him why he’s talking with a british accent, and every time he says “I’m not”.
My sister married an east indian guy and now whenever we see them, my boyfriend has taken on a new accent. He will talk normally most of the time but when it’s just me he’s talking to he will go full Apu from the Simpsons. I was horrified when I first heard it and told him to stop. Once again, he acted like I had no idea what I was talking about.
This brings me to yesterday, we were with my sister, her husband, and his friends (all east indian guys) and my boyfriend started talking with a terribly done fake indian accent and he was called out on it. He laughed and said he didn’t realize he was doing it. I have never cringed harder in my life.
What do I do? Is he losing his mind and seriously thinks he isn’t doing this? Is he knowingly doing this and thinks it’s funny? I’m seriously considering leaving him over this because it drives me nuts and I can’t have him doing that to my family members.
tldr my boyfriend talks in fake british and east indian accents and pretends he doesn’t. spoke to my (indian) brother in law and his friends in a fake accent and he was immediately roasted. i cringed into my next life and want to leave him over this because he laughs it off and says he isn’t doing an accent.
