We've been together for 4 years. We're American.
A I met a junior coworker recently who said she was interested in doing my job someday. We have a similar career background so I said we should have coffee and I'd explain how I got to my point from the job she's at now. She thanked me and picked a day and time.
I mentioned this interaction the day it happened to my wife and she said it was inappropriate to go on a one on one trip to get coffee with somebody of the opposite sex. This reaction surprised me. I would be fine if my wife had coffee or lunch with a male co-worker. If they were doing it all the time or having drinks alone after work, that's another thing.
Anyway, my wife and I had some trouble communicating about it. Some arguing. Some silent treatment. I said I wasn't comfortable taking back the invitation and the fight just kind of died out.
Well today was the day. I met the junior coworker at the front doors of the office and we walked a couple blocks to the coffee shop. We talked about career stuff. I bought the coffees on the company card with the plan to expense it. This was a meeting that benefits the company after all. Then we said goodbye and went back to work. It lasted about 20 minutes. If it matters, I wear a wedding ring and at one point we talked about Thanksgiving and I mentioned my wife and family.
I told my wife about the coffee meeting tonight and she blew up. I thought we had settled that it was ok and she appears to have not understood that the meeting was already scheduled. And she's mad that I participated in it. She said she's embarrassed/humiliated that we might have been seen together and says this junior coworker might think I'm interested in her.
Am I really just naive or especially dense? Not that I think it matters, but this coworker is not attractive to me. I'm typically asked to mentor junior employees, male and female, and my job is filled by mostly men. Typical mentoring at my company includes meeting for coffee. My company has made it clear they're trying to recruit more women into this role. In my mind I was just being helpful to her and the company.
Well, it looks like either I or my wife is sleeping on the couch tonight and I'd like to wake up to some outside perspectives.
TL;DR: Wife is pissed I had coffee with a co-worker of the opposite sex. I'm...confused.
