Kind of a weird story, but what the heck.
I was adopted back when I was 1yo by my mother's sister and her husband (62M) (I call them mom and dad of course), after my mom lost her life due to a tragic gun accident involving my biological father, who was a police officer at the time.
Due to my biological father being an employee of the state, my aunt and her husband sued the state on my behalf for restitution. They won the case and a bank account was set up in my name for ~100,000$US.
Fast forward to me being 21, my parents (aunt and her husband) sit me down to tell me the whole story (I knew the story of my adoption since the age of 5, so I'm talking about the story behind the money) and that the account now has about 280,000$US in it, pretty cool for a young me. (the only thing they were allowed to do with the money was to put it in very safe plans that give like 1% interest per year and such, so that's why it didn't explode to the millions)
few months pass and I get a letter from a bank saying that my late mother left a debt with the bank that is now roughly 100,000$US due to interest and shit. I freak out and tell my parents. We lawyer up and I get to keep the vast majority of the money (about 265,000$US), but the catch is that it's now in a bank account registered to my aunt's name and I'm a beneficiary, so I can't withdraw money or anything from the account, she gets to do whatever with it, but I trust her since she's my mom, and they're not strapped for cash any time soon. After a while they tell me they've found an apartment they want me to buy to rent it out and get the money for myself, pretty neat.
I see the apartment, it's shit, in a shit neighborhood, in a shit city. It costs (+lawyer fees + realtor fees + other fees + mandatory renovations etc) over 175,000$US. I didn't really want to go through with it, but I folded, because I was very naive and knew jack about real estate. I also bought a very reasonable used manual car for 10,000$US and after 3 years splurged to get a Prius with another 20,000$US. (Cars are expensive where I'm from)
So let's do some math:
Started with 280,000$US
-15,000$US debt shenanigans
175,000$US shitty overpriced (found that out after a year) apartment (pretty sure their realtor "friend" screwed them and me to get rid of that shitty property and collect a fat fee for it)
30,000$US freaking Used cars that I actually needed
after all that crap I should have about 60,000$US right?
Well yesterday my mom tells me very nonchalantly how there's nothing left in the account. At first I wasn't very alarmed by it, I just asked her what happened to the rest of the money and she tried to play it off with "I don't know" and "it was used for different things for the apartment" and such. Then this morning we sat for breakfast (it's very normal for 26 year olds to live with their parents where I'm from) and I brought that thing up, my mom played it off again but then my dad bursted at her (not violently, just raised his voice a little) to tell me exact answers. She couldn't give me a straight answer.
I moved on with my day as I didn't want to cause any drama about it but now I'm feeling like something must be fishy, I'm worried my mom used that money for herself, especially since she doesn't need it in the slightest. I can still access partial records about that account and will probably do so tomorrow.
A part of me is pretty sure my mom doesn't know what she's talking about, since they're not the most tech-oriented people.
I will know more once I check at the bank tomorrow. I'll update this thread if anyone will be interested in it (I probably will even if no one's interested lol)
TL;DR I should have like 60K in a savings account but my mom freaked me out by saying there's nothing left in it, now I'm going full detective mode for further updates
