Last night my brother's friend came over and he had a very bad cough. From the other room it sounded very deep and painful. It was honestly kind of disturbing, so we asked him what was wrong.
He told us that he's been sick since Halloween and that his parents will currently not pay for his doctor's visits or medicines because he was caught with alcohol in college earlier in the semester. (His family is Mormon.) He also said that he gets sick like this at least once a year, but I don't know how he treated his illnesses in the past.
On top of that, his parents (according to my brother) don't seem to believe in any kind of effective medicine. For instance, his grandparents only gave him homeopathic remedies but nothing else. And frankly, his parents are morons, among other things. They buy into every MLM and quack remedy there is. I don't know if they believe in faith healing, but I wouldn't be surprised if they do.
To be clear, his parents aren't preventing him from going to the doctor. They just won't pay for it or any medical care he may receive. He has like $10 in his bank account.
I grew up with a father who would not give me vaccines or medicine for anything, so this really pisses me off. I'm seriously considering paying at least part of his medical bills if he can't find the insurance to cover it. But I've never really dealt with caring for other people's kids before, so I don't know how to handle this.
TL;DR: Anti-medicine parents won't pay for very sick son's medical care because alcohol; should I offer to pay?
