For a quick backstory: we were together long distance for a while after meeting in person at work (dated in person a year, she moved back to Scotland, long distance for another year and half), and I finally moved to her country (from the US). I've been here about 8.5 months, I never drove a car back in the States, and I got my license and a car here about a month ago. Suffice to say, I've been taking any chance I could to drive.
It was a pretty lazy, uneventful day, and my partner's been feeling a bit sick, so she was in and out of naps most of the day. I got bored and wanted to get out of the house, so I asked if she wanted to go for a hike or out to the store, but she was adamant on sleeping, so I said I was gonna go out for a drive.
I only intended to get some food at first, but as I was pulling out of our street, I got the idea to drive around town to get to know it better - fastest ways to the hospital, quick ways to places we go; that kind of thing. I stopped to get a quick lunch and texted her saying "I'll be back in an hour or so, I'm just going to drive around a bit and get to know the town." No response, so I assumed she was sleeping.
After about an hour and change, I was on a highway-ish stretch of road just outside of town heading back when my phone starting blowing up. At first I figured it was just my partner responding, but it continuously rang for a good 10 minutes, so I pulled off the road quickly thinking something bad might have happened. I called her back, and she answers right away and snaps immediately saying "Where are you?" I told her I texted her, and she says "I didn't get a text, where are you?" I explained again, which she just met with "Bullshit. Where are you specifically?" I looked around, and told her frankly that I wasn't sure, I was on the [name of highway outside the city], but pulled off at a service station because I was worried something was wrong. She scoffed and said "Right, whatever. Bye." and hung up. I took a screenshot of the text message and sent it to her on Messenger, which she read and didn't respond to.
I chalked it up to her just being worried (she tends to over-worry a lot because of her anxiety disorder), so I drove off the bad mood and went back home. I said hello to her when I got in. She was sat at the table and told me to come sit, we had to talk, etc., so I sat.
She said, calmly, "I want you to be honest with me right now. Where were you?" I pulled out my phone, showed her the text message again, and explained again. I said (more or less): "I don't know the city very well, even when you direct me or I use the GPS, so I wanted to drive around a bit to get to know the streets better, especially if something went wrong and I needed to take you to the hospital; I didn't know the exact way until earlier. Not up to anything sketchy; just a bit stupid." (The stupid bit was trying to lighten the mood)
I barely finish speaking before she says, "So you weren't out fucking someone else? Give me a break. I'm not a fucking dickhead." I was taken aback a bit, and immediately said "No, what? Of course not". She begins going off on a shouting spree, about how she 'sacrificed a lot to make this work' and how she now 'regrets it because I threw it all away and can't own up to it".
I told her to relax (which proved to be not the best idea), but I ultimately doubled down on the truth. I asked her how I could prove I wasn't lying. I offered to show her two receipts (one for gas, one for Subway). None of this seemed to help, so I grabbed my keys and told her I was going to let her cool down. She starts laughing and says "There it is! Once it gets tough, you just fuck off to fuck someone else. Go then, fuck if I care. Have fun, cunt". I left and just told her I'd see her later.
I'm sort of just driving around still. I don't really know a lot of people here still, and those I do know are mostly her friends. I'm just sat at a McDonalds drinking a milkshake lol. She's never acted like this before, so I'm not sure how to go about approaching this. Any advice would be fantastic.
tl;dr: New driver goes driving in new city/country to get to know it better. New driver's partner accuses him of cheating. Any help appreciated.
