I’ve been with my bf for almost 6 months now and I just recently found out that him and his ex still message each other almost every day. I brought this up to him and he doesn’t seem to care bc “it’s just memes about inside jokes.”
The back story is that him and his ex were on and off for 3 yrs, when finally, she broke up with him. 2 weeks after she broke up with him, he started dating me (which I didn’t know until 2 months into our relationship)
So, when I brought my discomfort about his frequent contact with his ex, he eventually told me that the reason he’s still in contact with her is because he still feels closer to her than to me, and that “I’ll probably stop talking to her when we become closer.”
I felt v hurt by this because now I feel like I’m second to her, and I have to work hard to win him from his ex.
Also I feel like this is really unfair to his ex because he’s not letting her move on.
The problem is, I really want to try to make this work because I rly like him. Is there anything I can do or say to try to change his mind? I also don’t know if I have the right to tell him to stop talking to her when he doesn’t want to because then I’d be paranoid that he’s still talking to her behind my back...
TLDR: boyfriend won’t stop contact with his ex claiming that it’s because he feels closer to her than me. Want to try to make this work, don’t know what to do
Edit: Thank you guys, you gave me the courage to stand up for myself to him. I told him to either we break up or he stops talking to her. He said he’ll stop talking to her. Hopefully this is the end of this issue
