Boyfriend [21M] bought a promise ring for me [21F] for Christmas, but blew up at me when it didn't fit and stormed out.

This just happened tonight and frankly, I'm really upset. My boyfriend and I go to college together and have been together for two years. This year, he really wanted me to to spend New Year's with his family, which I agreed. However, I still wanted to celebrate Christmas with my family so I've been with them for the past couple of days.

Today, I just flew across the country to meet up with his side of the family for the New Year. I got to his parents' place and said hi to everyone in his family and we all had a nice dinner together. I was completely exhausted due to the jet lag thought so when I finally got upstairs to our room, I had totally forgot that my boyfriend still hadn't given me my Christmas gift that he's been talking about since before break.

So he makes me sit on the bed and close my eyes, which I do. He then shoves a small box into my hands and I open my eyes. I open the box and it's such a beautiful and elegant ring. Not over-the-top, simple but elegant. He tells me he loves me and it's a promise ring. I have tears in my eyes at this point and I hurry to take it out and put it on after saying thank you a hundred times. Tbh, right after I pull it out I had a feeling it might be a bit small. I'm a fairly skinny person but my fingers have always been quite chubby for some reason. Anyway, I go to slide on the ring and it barely slides past my knuckle. I think I said, "Oh no, it doesn't fit..." My boyfriend's expression immediately turned sour and asked me if I was sure it wouldn't fit. I tried to harder to slide it on but it wouldn't go any further and I told him I didn't want to get it stuck or anything. He frowned some more, grabbed my hand, and tried himself to slide it on more. He was trying really hard and it was starting to hurt (like quite a lot) so I started asking him to stop since it was hurting. Then he threw my hand back at me, whispered-yelled "Fuck" and angrily grabbed his hair.

I didn't know what to do so I stood up and put my hand on his shoulder and said that I was really sorry but maybe we could get it resized together. He whipped around angrily and yelled, "When did you fingers get so fucking fat?!" Uhhh..they've always been like this? Then he put his face in his hands and just started mumbling that "everything was ruined and [he] couldn't even get his money back." I kept saying I was sorry and tried to hug him but he kept on backing away from me. Hit outburst plus my jet lag and the general anxiety of being at a new place all boiled over and I just straight up started bawling. He didn't even look at me, he walked straight out. It's now 10:17pm and I have no idea where he is. I think I might go to sleep now but I don't even know what caused this or what happened.

He's never acted this way before so I really don't know what could've caused this. I'm not even angry anymore, just hurt. Should I even bother staying up until he comes back so we can talk it out (if he even wants too...)? I haven't texted or called and he hasn't either. Some of his family is still downstairs so I kind of want to avoid going down.

Tl;dr: Flew over to spend New Years with my boyfriend and his family today. After dinner, my boyfriend gave me a beautiful promise ring that he's been excited about for the past couple weeks. It didn't fit. He got really upset, yelled at me, and walked out while I was crying. He still hasn't come back and I don't even know what caused this.
