My [18F] childhood friend [17M] is using dangerous drugs that seem to be affecting him, should I tell his mother?

He and I have been friemds for years, since we were both 6/7. I like him a lot and I have feelings for him so it really hurts me to see him how he is. I know he is depressed and has gone through a lot growing up. I know his father was abusive and sold drugs and essentially landed himself a ticket into prison and he has always had to work, he’s even missed school because of it. I know so much about him because we live right next door and our mothers are best of friends. His mother has had a lot of health issues since I can remember, and they recently found a tumor in her head.

I guess my friend has just been really unlucky with life and has had to go through so much. I knew he drank and used marijuana which I know isn’t super bad but he started taking pills and drinking some other types of drugs. There was an incident just this friday in school with him and drugs. Apparently he drank some kind of cough medicine and he looked half desd in school and he ended up falling alseep in one of my classes and wouldn’t wake up so I freaked out. He’s just been like that lately.

He got so skinny and lifeless that it’s hurting even looking at him. I talked with him about later afterschool when he seemed to not be high again and was really upset with him and tried talking with him about it and he told me he was just super tired of everything and wanted some peace. I’m just super worried for him and don’t want him to overdose on something. I want to get him help but I also do not want him to resent me. Any advice?
