My grandmother (75) filed my unemployment and has been claiming the benefits without me (25) knowing it.
Hey Reddit!
First, I’m not too sure if this is the right subreddit, so hopefully someone will let me know. My grandfather had a family business doing hard manual labor and it became profitable, because not many people do it. My grandfather did the physical work, while grandmother actually ran the business. He passed away a few years ago and then the business was passed on to my dad and under his management it fell apart. My grandmother controls all the money in the family. She does everyones taxes. My dad’s house, boats, and trucks are all in grandmother’s name. She gives him an allowance and then he pays me.
A couple years ago I decided to get my shit together and go to school, so I moved back home. I told them I could not live with them, and they let me live in one of their old trailers. My dad gives me $200 a week to cover bills, food, and any other expenses. For whatever reason they feel, there are some weeks I wont get anything. For example, after receiving the stimulus check, I didn’t get money from them for weeks. I don’t have any other income, because I needed to focus to graduate and I worked for the family business before it tanked late last year (I received the same payment anyways).
So recently my dad casually let it slip that my grandmother filed for unemployment for me (as an employer) and that she’s been giving my payment to him to give to me. She previously told me around April she tried to file for me, but didn’t get anything. I’m still getting $200 a week. In general, I don’t know how much money they have, they only talk about how I wont have to worry when they die. I think they are millionaires, they own a lot of private and commercial properties in town, but they are not flashy people and did not spoil me growing up. I just graduated last week and having been going to interviews. I’d like to get new equipment for work and have some savings so I can move.
I got a new bank account today and changed the pin for the unemployment, so that now the money goes to the new account. And you can’t change the account that the stimulus deposits to, unfortunately. I’m pretty devastated that my family did this and that I missed out on $9,000. The thing is if I tell IRS that my grandmother committed fraud, I’m worried that it’s possible that they might find more. I’m not sure how else to go about getting the money back, any advice?
TL; DR: My grandmother filed my unemployment, I don’t know where the money is going or how to get it back.
