My wife(36f) and I(36m) have been together for 11 years, married for 8 and actively trying to get pregnant for around 5 years now. After such a long time we broached the topic of IVF, and my wife’s mother offered to pay for treatment.
A few months after the offer, we were contacted by a cousin, explaining that MIL had boasted about delaying our attempts until it would be too late.
We confronted MIL and she tried to get out of it saying cousin must have misunderstood what he heard, but eventually admitted it. Turns out, she doesn’t want her first grandchild to not have the family name, and decided this was an appropriate way to go about it.
We completely cut contact and have been trying to figure out a way to g it alone, shits expensive yo.
Recently some of the extended family have been contacting my wife, saying we’re horrible for cutting MIL off and she just wanted the best “for the family.”
This has been making my wife seriously second guess her decision.
TL:DR MIL lied about paying for ivf we couldn’t afford without it because she doesn’t want her first grandchild to have my surname.
So a sanity check, Reddit, we’re not wrong here, right?
