I [24F] have a friend [26M] and I don't want to go to his wedding. His fiance is, without exaggeration, the meanest person I have ever met in my life. Not even to me personally, but to my friend, his family, and our mutual friends. His mother has sobbed about how she's worried about his decision to be with her.
We used to be very close, but I haven't hung out with him one-on-one since he moved in with her last year, and neither have any other of our friends. I have seen him maybe 4 times at large gatherings since then, but he hardly talks to me. At this point I'm not sure if I even consider us "friends" anymore, but I feel obligated to go to the wedding as to not burn any bridges.
TLDR: So my question is: what is the absolute least I can get away with going to this wedding? They said "technically" there's a strict limit on the number of people that can go to the ceremony because of COVID, so I think I'll skip that, and leave the reception after a couple hours. Is that rude? Is a $20 gift card a slap in the face?
