How do we (F33/M36) tell neighbors (F40/M40) we don’t want to hang out?
Neighbors moved in about a year ago, we have lived here three years. They are nice enough people, have 1 kid (F6) and we have none.
We’ve gotten together just 4 times to be friendly, just dinner/BBQ to be neighborly. Their kid is scared of our dogs and I don’t have a childproof home so I don’t like hosting them here.
The problem is that they want to hang out EVERY WEEKEND. They moved from across the country and don’t have many friends. I don’t feel like it’s my responsibility to be their friends just because we share a fence. We don’t have much in common and run out of things to talk about quickly.
I don’t mind a yearly dinner or something to keep the peace, and I’m fine being a good neighbor (picking up packages when they’re out of town, etc) but I’m sick of being questioned every weekend “hey do you want to hang out?” We’ve tried the “we’re busy, not a good time” but by the next weekend they are texting again. Not sure why they are so persistent but I feel trapped in my house now trying to avoid them. They will look over our fence if we’re in the yard with our dogs.
How do we push them off without making an enemy? TIA.
TL;DR: Persistent neighbors want to socialize every weekend, and we don’t know how to tell them to leave us alone without making enemies.
